Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Drop Brings Forth a Beautifully Chaotic New Spear to the Game
The winter game drop for Minecraft has arrived — and it brings with it the first new weapon added to the title since the heavy club made its debut. The javelin is finally here and it could very well alter your gameplay in Minecraft, particularly when you thrive on pandemonium.
A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem
The Mayhem Mounts update also adds several new features and updates centered around animal mounts in the game. That central theme made the spear the ideal addition for this release, as the development team had already known it was the moment to introduce a fresh combat tool.
"We knew initially that we desired a new weapon that would increase combat distance, and we wanted it to be fighting from atop a creature," explained a lead developer. "We tried out a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both felt great when we tested our prototypes and also made sense for the intended purpose."
If you're curious whether mounted combat means you can charge at your companions on steeds, the answer is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an combat move excellently designed for it.
"[Jousting on horses is one of the biggest use cases for the spear, and it's a blast," the developer continues. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the jab attack, where you just stab your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you lower your spear and inflict more damage [with] the more momentum you have. So [it’s] tailor-made for knightly combat."
Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures
The chaotic fun doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] ideal for equipping the wings and taking to the skies and creating genuine chaos," she teases.
In other words: Sky jousting is now real, and it deserves to be an Olympic sport without delay.
Another major addition in this fresh content is the underwater mount. This sea-dwelling mob, which is based on the nautilus shells we've all been collecting for years, can be tamed and mounted for submarine exploration. Not only will it move you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also maintain your air supply, so there's no requirement to return to the surface for a breath.
The rest of the additions are largely things that are out to get you, as is the tradition of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a undead nautilus appearing in the water, frequently with a zombie villager on its back. If you manage to defeat the Drowned, though, you can befriend the undead mount — or the regular one, for that matter — with a spiky fish.
"We've been thinking about this issue for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it appeared to be the ideal opportunity to also unveil something for aquatic environments," the developer explains. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a several proposals for aquatic rides that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus design sketches looked impressive, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."
She also notes that there are actually two different types of zombie Nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you discover underwater."
Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks
Additional features include the sun-proof skeletons, biome-specific undead archers that can withstand the sun, which means there's no getting away from them if you find yourself in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another fresh creature. These passive, zombified camels have an notable look that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The applies equally to undead steeds, who have a analogous rib-popping design and can sometimes be encountered after dark with a lance-wielding zombie on their back.
The last two things on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some highly requested tweaks to equestrian travel. Now, you can cross waterways while atop a horse. Also, high-tier barding is now craftable at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the ultimate protection it is worthy of.
A Fittingly Chaotic Finale
Overall, the last content update of the year is a solid offering. The spear alone — and the mayhem it enables — would have felt like a considerable upgrade. Add in the Nautilus, and additional creatures trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a little more dangerous.
The Mayhem Mounts update is out now for all major editions of Minecraft.
